An equation for the direction of maximum turbulent voricity in a turbulent shear flow is obtained. For a weak homogeneous turbulent field with a uniform transverse velocity gradient, that direction is found to be reasonably close to (but different from) the direction of maximum mean strain rate for a range of velocity gradients. The degree of alignment of the turbulent vortices is also determined.
