Thermonuclear plasma research requires accurate knowledge of the electron-temperature isotherms in experimental plasmas. A special laser-spectrometer combination has been developed which observes the Doppler-shift of monochromatic giant-pulse rubylaser light when scattered by energetic electrons (by the Thomson effect). Spatial and temporal resolutions of 0.3 mm and 0.02 μsec have been achieved, with percentage accuracy of temperature determination, in the range 50-4000 ev (0.5-40 × 10 6 °K).
