The principles and performance of different grating shearing interferometers with spatially incoherent illumination are interpreted using a simple heuristic approach based on the multiple mutually incoherent superposition of the well known Ronchi-Talbot test. The parameters of the fringes are easily predicted without resorting to extended analytical or computer calculations.
