The cross section for ionization of the methane molecule by impact of fast electrons is evaluated by means of the Born approximation. Use is made of a single-configurational wave function set up from analytic one-center MO's for the description of the electronic ground state of the molecule. The wave function of the ejected electron resulting from ionization is approximated by a Coulomb continuum function. The calculated cross section is compared with experiment. The calculated momentum distribution of the ejected electron has a maximum at a very low momentum.
