The formation of precipitate on addition of certain electrolyte formulas to a commercial 8.5% synthetic amino acid solution was investigated. The precipitate was identified by chemical analysis and infrared spectroscopy as a calcium-phosphate complex. It was found that formation of this calcium-phosphate complex could be prevented by addition of each ion to a separate large volume container prior to •final mixing, or by addition of phosphate ion to the final mixture before calcium ion addition. With thorough mixing, up to 30 mEq of potassium phosphate may be combined with up to 15 mEq of calcium glucoheptonate using either method described.
