Ninety-four Vietnam veterans were surveyed as to the effect of the Vietnam Memorial dedication on psychiatric symptoms. Attendees and non-attendees reported a similar degree of symptom exacerbation. Non-attended inactive veterans center clients reported no increase in symptoms in contrast to non-attendee active clients. Identifying characteristics of populations at risk for exacerbation of trauma-related stress reactions in response to evocative events has implications for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
