The differential expansion is magnified by an optical lever, the sensitivity of which is increased by an arrangement of two graticules, the image of one acting as a vernier to the other. Changes of length of 10 -5 cm can be determined. The apparatus has been used to measure differences in the thermal expansion of samples of fused silica which had been given different heat-treatments.
