Characteristics of the continuing relationship between former spouses were examined as a function of parent status, gender, length of marriage, and time since separation. It was hypothesized that each of these demographic characteristics would be related to the frequency of contact, quality of the relationship, circumstances initiating the contacts, and topics discussed. Findings were based on a sample of 118 separated or divorced persons who participated in a longitudinal study of marital disruption. Aspects of the continuing relationship were found to be significantly related to each of the demographic characteristics that was studied, and implications of the findings for the field of family research and family practice were discussed.
