Previous work on the double excitation of helium by protons below 500 keV seemed to prove the validity of the Born approximation. This conclusion is challenged by recent experimental evidence. The authors evaluate the sensitivity of the Born calculations to atomic parameters and in particular to electron correlation. They conclude that the previously observed agreement between experiment and the Born approximation was accidental.
