This paper discusses the results of a questionnaire survey of cartographic personnel and academic curricula in Nigeria. The analysis shows that cartography and GIS are subsumed under geography and surveying disciplines, and that Nigeria and other developing countries have not yet responded positively to the new requirement to create awareness of specialization in cartography, remote sensing, and GIS in the university curricula. Also, the study reveals that both personnel and students are making greater demands for a cartography discipline. It is concluded that trained personnel in cartography, GIS and map-use awareness through improved academic curricula should be given greater attention in order to improve the status of maps, cartographic professionalism, personnel efficiency, and participation in national policy decisions on mapping and environment.
