As an alternative to more traditional school psychology models which emphasize individual case study and tend to focus on pathological processes, a model is presented which capitalizes on naturally occuring strengths found within the systems of family and school. An ecological and transactional approach based on the pioneering work of Nicholas Hobbs with Project Re-Ed, liaison psychology makes use of tensions which arise from differing points of view and seeks to facilitate the growth of effective relationships rather than to attempt to “cure” children who are in educational and emotional trouble. An overview is presented of the theoretical and philosophical assumptions upon which the liaison approach is based. This introductory material is followed by a discussion of step by step strategies which can be used by the practicing school psychologist.
