The dipole approximation given by Seaton in 1962 is used to calculate cross sections for n → n + 1 transitions in hydrogen produced by electron impact. Results are tabulated for 1 ⩽ n ⩽ 40. It is found that the results differ significantly from those obtained by Gryzinski in 1959 using classical theory. It is believed that the dipole approximation gives the more reliable results.
