The Jackson factor of {211} garnet faces is determined from measurements of the anisotropy of the displacement rate of growth steps on the basis of a kinetic SOS model. Experimental results on two dimensional nucleation are used for an estimation of the edge free energy. The calculations result in a Jackson factor of γ = 6 for the {211} face. The edge free energy is estimated to 1.7 × × 10−11 J/m. From the step displacement rate the elementary kink unit attachment frequency for {211} is calculated to be 5 × 103 s−1. On the basis of suitably chosen kink units containing two formula units RE3Fe5O12 a unified Kossel-like approach to both {110} and {211} is set up.
