This text is one of a series of comprehensive monographs published by the International Society of Neuropathology. Dennis Dickson and his Chapter and Advisory Editors are to be congratulated for assembling such a useful text on neurodegenerative diseases. All of the major neurodegenerative diseases are covered and there are excellent explanations of more recently classified disorders as well as disorders that overlap in their morphologic features. The organizational scheme has chapters grouping neurodegenerative disorders under tauopathies, synucleinopathies, trinucleotide repeats, prion disorders, frontotemporal degenerative motor neuron disorders, Alzheimer disease and “other.” The Introduction addresses important general disease mechanisms such as apoptosis, oxidative mechanisms, abnormal protein-protein interactions, the ubiquitin pathway, and genetics, etc. In addition to the chapters being generally very well written the gross and microscopic color illustrations are superb, and numerous drawings, tables and charts nicely facilitate the reader's understanding of the text. Overall, the monograph should prove to be a valuable aid for anyone who teaches neurodegenerative disorders to medical students or residents; or anyone simply interested in being “up to speed” in their understanding of the newer concepts underlying the classification and mechanisms of pathogenesis of these disorders.
