A linear arrangement of the P-N-B-N-P linkage occurs in the unique extended structure of the cation of the borinium salt 1, which was obtained from the reaction of [tBu3PN]Li with BCl3. The related species (tBu3PN)2BH was also prepared and shown to react with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] to afford the analogous salt [(tBu3PN)2B][B(C6F5)4]. NMR data and ab initio computations infer that tight ion pairing occurs for 1 in nonpolar solvents.
