The influence of pH in the range 1.0 to 13.0 on the structure of sanguinarine has been investigated by spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric measurements. The data on absorption maxima, molar extinction coefficient, fluorescence emission maxima, relative fluorescence intensity and fluorescence quantum yield of the sanguinarine under various pH are presented. It is suggested that the pH dependent absorbance and fluorescence property of sanguinarine is due to the formation of the carbinolamine by hydroxylation at C‐6 at alkaline pH.
