The apparatus, column preparation and chromatographic efficiency of micro high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are discussed in this review. Micro techniques are described individually with respect to pumping, injection, columns, detection, pre-treatment and gradient elution. Micro-HPLC columns are roughly divided into four categories according to dimensions and materials, viz.: micro PTFE columns, flexible fused-silica columns, ultramicro Pyrex glass columns and opentubular capillary columns. The chromatographic performance of each column is examined and some applications to natural samples are discussed.
