Prior work on pH-gradient-TLC is reviewed. The preparation of pH-gradient layers on silica gel G with defined pH values from 0 to 9 has recently been reported for the first time which made possible an investigation of the chromatographic behavior of substances having pK values in this pH interval. Examples were selected from monobasic and polybasic acids, ampholytes, organic bases, alkaloids, and pH indicators. The curves obtained are compared and discussed. The results show that the chromatographic behavior in a defined pH-T-gradient permits conclusions concerning the compound type when analyzing minute amounts of unknown substances.
