An enzyme preparation was obtained from rat small intestine catalyzing the de-carboxylation of 5-hydroxykynurenine to yield 4, 6-dihydroxyquinoline via 5-hydroxykynurenamine. The enzyme was highly specific and neither kynurenine, 3-hydroxykynurenine, tryptophan nor 5-hydroxytryptophan could replace 5-hydroxykynurenine. Some properties of the enzyme are presented.
