In the surface layer of an exposed marine embayment, complex spatio‐temporal interactions characterized the variances in phytoplankton biomass and related factors observed during 1 year. There is evidence that differential grazing by zooplankton is an important factor in the creation and maintenance of spatial heterogeneity in the phytoplankton.
