Taking hold: Monoanionic tris(phosphino)silyl ligands ([SiPR3]=[(2-R2PC6H4)3Si]−) stabilize unusual five-coordinate FeI complexes. The silane [SiPPh3]H reacts with mesityliron(II) to give [(SiPPh3)FeIIMes], which displays a CH agostic interaction. Treatment with HCl and reduction affords the terminally bonded FeIN2 complex [(SiPPh3)FeN2] (see scheme; structures show only donor atoms of [SiPPh3]), which yields hydrazine under protolytic conditions.
