The design and construction of a simple mechanical Fabry-Pérot etalon is described. Attention to detail is an important feature of etalon design. The elimination of screwed junctions, by manufacturing the etalon body from a solid piece of mild steel, assists freedom from flexure and hence aids the stability of the system. Likewise, frictional drag in the adjusting mechanism has been kept to a minimum. A survey of suitable spacing media in the range 15-200 μm revealed Melinex film (ICI Ltd.) to be superior to wire loops, cleaved mica and metal foil. The interferometer will stay in good adjustment for periods of a few weeks.
