In this note we present a construction for the Jacobson chains of columns from the given elementary divisors of a square matrix A over a field F, that is not necessarily algebraically closed. It generalizes the algorithm used by Gantmacher for the closed field case and does not assume a knowledge of the second canonical form under similarity.
