The use of 42 K to estimate total-body potassium (TBK) using whole-body monitors is well established. Using small populations of healthy adults several authors have derived regression equations in order to predict calibration factors as an alternative to their evaluation using 42 K. The calibration factor F for any individual is expected to depend upon these physical characteristics which together determine the efficiency of measurement on the monitor. The usefulness of including body density in the calibration equation has been examined. In addition a detailed study has been made of the influence of body habitus on background counting rates.
