Cytoplasmic intermediate filaments (IFs) arise from a complex multigene family. The first extended protein and cDNA sequences provided a molecular explanation for IF diversity and also a basis for understanding filament structure. The expression patterns of IFs parallel known principles of embryonic development and classical histology. Thus they can provide information useful in human tumour diagnosis.
