The isostructural compounds (MC 4 O 4 ·2 H 2 O) 3 ·CH 3 COOH·H 2 O (M=Zn 2+ ,Mn 2+ ) crystallize in the triclinic space group P1̄, if grown in solution of high ionic strength. The structural features are similar to those in the cubic phase. Correspondingly CH 3 COOH·H 2 O can be trapped in cage like cavities, formed by the 3-dimensional framework o f M 2+ and C 4 O 4 2- . The metal ions are coordinated in a distorted octahedral fashion. The squarate dianions act as four-fold monodentate ligands.
