In recent years, "illegitimate" recombinational events have come under close scrutiny with the realization that insertion sequences may play a role in this phenomenon. The identification and characterization of transposons with properties similar to that of insertion elements have facilitated genetic and physical studies on the mechanisms of translocation, deletion formation, inversion, and other forms of illegitimate recombination (Kleckner 1977; Schwesinger 1977; Starlinger 1977).
