Pine (Pinus roxburghii) pollen grown in suspension cultures was used to study the effects of growth regulators and light conditions on germination and pollen tube growth. Indol-3-yl acetic acid, gibberellic acid, ethylene, abscisic acid and cyclic AMP (cAMP) at low concentrations (1–10 mg 1−1) promoted germination and tube growth. Addition of 1 and 10 mg 1−1 cAMP to any of the growth regulators had a promotory effect. Pollen tube growth decreased in white light as compared to the dark, and was increased in red light. Far-red light counteracted the effect of red light. The effect of growth regulators in causing the enhanced tube growth appears to be manifested through substances such as cAMP, and phytochrome seems to be involved.
