Single spin qubits, such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, have recently emerged as a new generation of probes of quantum matter. Here, the authors present a theory describing how noise magnetometry with spin qubits can address several questions that have arisen in experimental studies of 1D systems. For instance, by tuning experimental parameters such as probe-sample distance, it is possible to measure correlations not accessible before, e.g. dynamic charge and spin susceptibilities with wave-vector resolution.
