This review provides a framework for risk stratification and management of abrupt coronary occlusion during balloon angioplasty.
Balloon angioplasty is associated with an often unpredictable risk of abrupt coronary occlusion, which is the leading cause of in-hospital death and myocardial infarction. Clinical, angiographic and lesion variables predictive of risk of abrupt occlusion are reviewed and a low, medium and high risk profile stratification is developed. Current management of abrupt occlusion is discussed.
