The effect of Cl- on the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in simulated concrete pore solutions was studied by the polarization curve measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel was correlated with the Cl- concentration of the solutions. With the increase of the Cl- concentration, the corrosion potential of the reinforcing steel shifted negatively and its corrosion current density rose, and the Fe and Fe2+ content of the steel surface film increased but the Fe3+ content decreased. When the Cl- concentration reached 0.50 M in the solution, the passive film was destroyed and the localized corrosion took place on the steel surface.
