A description is given of the different types of solid-state image intensifiers together with a comparison of their methods of operation. The characteristics of photoconductive and electroluminescent materials are summarized with particular emphasis on the problems of their optimum combination in the double-layer type of intensifier with and without optical feedback. The optical and electrical characteristics of the over-all devices are compared, and some of the possible applications, such as their use for radar display and x-ray intensification, are discussed.
