The decarbonization of supply chains in the automotive industry is crucial to limit global warming as the industry is a main contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. The main emissions during the production of a car result from material production and further production steps of automotive components at suppliers. Therefore, supplier companies play an important role in reducing these emissions. To support the process of decarbonization, life-cycle based analysis of the supplier’s product portfolio is essential. Life cycle assessment is a widely accepted method for the analysis of environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions of products. However, when it comes to product portfolios composed by many products, the analysis is time and resources consuming. Therefore, a more effective way to analyze product portfolios in the automotive industry is needed. Based on existing approaches from literature, we have developed a structured method for identifying representative products in a product portfolio, estimating GHG emissions based on a uniform data structure and the visualizing the results in form of a portfolio. First exemplary results for the product portfolio of an automotive supplier company are shown.
