Experimental study demonstrates narrow-band tunable infrared conversion in alkali metal vapors, highlighting utility in nonlinear infrared spectrometers.
A study was made of conversion of radiation in alkali metal vapors involving two-photon excitation of a forbidden transition by high-power pump radiation and by a weak infrared signal. Measurements showed that, in addition to tunability over a wide frequency range, such conversion was of the narrow-band type and could be used in a nonlinear infrared spectrometer.
