To determine the accuracy and reliability of facial photogrammetry compared to direct surface measurements of the head, face, and ears.
Evaluated 18 healthy young white Canadian individuals of each sex after placing standardized anatomical landmarks on the face.
Obtained 104 direct surface measurements from the head, face, and ears and attempted to duplicate them using life-size frontal and left lateral photographs taken in standard position.
Classified photographic measurements as reliable if they were identical to or within 1 mm or 2 degrees of direct measurements.
Only 62 of the 104 direct measurements could be reproduced on photographs, and only 26 of those 62 (41.9%) satisfied the reliability criteria.
The lips and mouth demonstrated the highest consistency (7 of 13 reliable), whereas no ear measurements met the reliability threshold.
Inclinations accounted for 9 of the 26 reliable measurements, and profile prints allowed more vertical measurements but produced notable lateral distortion.
