Only when I was faced with the task of sharing my memories of a person with whom I was linked by forty-five years of joint work and friendship did I begin to understand how inadequate our memory is; in any case, I have been unable to reproduce in any coherent and consistent way whatever the principal milestones in that period of time. All that has remained in memory are isolated fragments.
