Does salbutamol inhalation induce multi-vessel coronary artery spasm in patients with COPD?
Salbutamol inhalation can induce fatal multi-vessel coronary artery spasm in patients with COPD, highlighting the need for caution when administering β-agonists to respiratory patients at risk for coronary spasm.
Clinicians should consider coronary spasm risk with salbutamol in COPD; single case leaves open incidence and causality.
Coronary artery spasm is a sudden and intense vasoconstriction of single-or multi-vessel coronary artery. It may be triggered by several acute stress. This case reports 72-year-old male with salbutamol inhalation suffer fatal multi-vessel coronary artery spasm. After intracoronary administration of nitroglycerin, coronary artery spasm was relieved. It reminds us to be cautious of β-agonist administration in respiratory patients with coronary artery spasm risk.

Li et al. (2018) conducted a case report in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n=1). Salbutamol inhalation was evaluated on Multi-vessel coronary artery spasm. Salbutamol inhalation induced a fatal multi-vessel coronary artery spasm in a 72-year-old male patient with COPD, which was subsequently relieved by intracoronary nitroglycerin.
