The importance of a knowledge of the thermal conductivity of moist soils was discussed in another paper in which experimental data were presented for Ottawa sand and Potter's flint. Results of experiments on heat transfer in remolded clay samples at various moisture contents are now reported. Clays differ from sands in various ways. In general, they have much more affinity for water, higher equilibrium moisture contents, and lower hydraulic permeability. Several investigators reported considerable moisture migration when clay samples were subjected to a temperature gradient.
