Countercontrol is defined as opposition or resistance to intervention. As such, it consumes time, increases program cost, and attenuates accountability of subject growth. Yet, little systematic research has been conducted to document its occurrence. This paper clarifies countercontrol by discussing variables that may precipitate its occurrence and presents implications for programming to mitigate the possibility of encountering this phenomenon.
