The usual shell model scheme suggests that the ground states of 08Ru and 1 0 1 ~~ should be 4d,,, and 5g,l2 respectively. However, as pointed out by Klinkenberg (1952), there is Some evidence that the 5g,js shell for odd neutrons fills in pairs, and he proposes that g9RU with 55 neutrons may have 50 neutrons in closed shells with the remaining five in the configuration 5g,ja(4), 4d6jn(1), while lolRu has its remaining seven in the co"figuration 5g7is(6), 4d,in(l).Paramagnetic resonance has also been observed in K,[Mo(CN),] ; K,[Moc],]; K2[MoCI,H201 ; [Ru(NH,)eICl,, 3HgCh; [R~(NHs)eICla (concentrated); and in a mixed crystal of (NH4)2[IrC1,] and (NHd)2[PtClJ.Investigatipns are being continued in these and other compounds of the Pt and Pd group elements. It was not easy to find a suitable ruthenium compound for this experiment, and it is a pleasure to thank Dr. Powell and Mr. Lever of Messrs. Johnson, Matthey & Co. Ltd. bothfor their valuable advice on the chemical side, and for supplying the ruthenium compound,The present measurements are consistent with this proposal.
