sive alternative to glycopeptides for the treatment of MRSA infections. Data from the United States and Europe have shown that vancomycinintermediate S. aureus isolates also remain susceptible to some of the conventional antimicrobial drugs, including co-trimoxazole (5). If their efficacy in vivo is validated by clinical trials, use of these conventional drugs would not only reduce the load on overstretched health care budgets but reduce the use of vancomycin, therefore decreasing the risk of isolates continuing to develop vancomycin resistance.
