Dissolution of the BaSO 4 (001) surface was studied for the first time by hydrothermal atomic force microscopy. Step velocities and pit nucleation rates as a function of temperature along with observations of surface morphology led to the conclusion that the dissolution process is most accurately described by a two-dimensional birth-and-spread model.
