It is extremely important to diagnostically differentiate the relatively rare multiple personality disorders from a wide range of borderline and schizophrenic illnesses which lead to fragmented and dissociated ego-states. The role of hypnosis as a regressive experience is discussed in relation to the production of artifacts of multiple-like personalities during therapy. Similar problems can also be observed in nonhypnotic treatment, where regressive aspects of behavior become intertwined with the transference. Issues of afFect, memory, and egocohesion are discussed in relation to strategies of psychotherapy.
