Inspired by the bird nest, we develop a hydrothermal approach to prepare MoS ₂ /carbon hollow microspheres with a carbon inner shell and a vertically aligned MoS ₂ outer shell, which show an excellent performance for reversible alkali-metal ion (Li ⁺ , Na ⁺ and K ⁺ ) storage.
