The effect of light‐scattering on the fluorescence polarization of solutions has been investigated both theoretically and empirically. The criteria by which turbidity depolarization may be recognised are described, and differentiated from those which characterise depolarization through optical rotation or birefringence. These criteria have been used to confirm that the fluorescence depolarization which accompanies actomyosin formation originates in increased light‐scattering rather than a real change in relaxation time.
