Focusing on a nineteenth century frontier community which provides remarkably complete documentation from its founding in 1857, this study analyzes the role of kinship and family structure in determining migration patterns. Part One details the demographic profile of the community. The second part examines the kinship networks and argues that the increase in extended families and the development of kinship networks retarded out-migration, just as kin ties had contributed to the initial settlement of the community.
