The effects of radiation damage due to the proton bombardment on the channeling phenomena in KCl, NaCl, KI, LiF, and NaF are studied using the backscattering technique. The growth curves show always sublinear relations with proton dose. For KCl and NaCl, the temperature dependence of formation of the defects and the channeling effects in the 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 axes are investigated. The results show that the recovery rate at high temperature is larger than that at low temperature and that body-centered interstitial defects in the sublattice are dominant in NaCl and face-centered defects in addition to body-centered ones exist in KCl.
