The spherical component of the refractive status of 289 myopic children, members of 165 families, was compared with that of their parents. The results indicate a much stronger relation-ship between the refractive status of children and their parents than has previously been reported for a sample of this size. The finding of sex-related differences in the correlations between parents and children provides evidence in support of the hypothesis that hereditary factors are involved in the development of myopia.
