Aggressive recruitment led to hiring and orienting 48 new staff members in 81/2 months. This influx caused severe fatigue in preceptors, uncertainty regarding abilities of new staff and junior staff concern about their ability to respond in crisis situations. The need to revise the orientation program and improve management approaches resulted in interviewing of staff nurses to identify strategies which might decrease the stress of assimilation.
