Summary The morphology of telson regeneration in postlarval Limulus polyphemus has been studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. Three types of ‘haemocyte’ (granular haemocyte, plasmatocyte and spherical dark cell) have been identified in the circulation. The characteristics and variants of these types are discussed in relation to clotting and to regeneration of tissues pre- and post-moult. It is suggested that plasmatocytes serve as pluripotential cells for the differentiation of tissues of the telson, in particular, nerve and muscle. This study provides a framework against which effects of xenobiotics on telson regeneration can be assessed.
